What comes with a hand washing station rental?
Each hand washing station is two-sided, so 2 people can wash at once. Foot pumps run water from a fresh-water tank, soap and paper towels come stocked, and used water drains into a separate gray-water tank. The station needs no hookups, so it works on grass, gravel or pavement.

Do construction sites need hand washing stations?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities on construction sites where workers use paints, coatings, herbicides, insecticides or other harmful materials. The washing facilities must be near the work and kept sanitary, with soap and towels. Tennessee follows these rules through TOSHA, its state OSHA plan.
Hand sanitizer alone does not wash off paint, chemicals or heavy grime. A station next to the toilet gives crews soap and water on every break. Read the rule in OSHA 1926.51, and see our OSHA porta potty requirements guide for toilet counts.
How many hand wash stations for a food event?
We recommend 1 hand wash station for every 2 toilets, rounded up, when food is served and no sink is nearby. An event with 4 porta potties and a food tent should have 2 stations. Place them near the food line and the toilets so guests wash before they eat.
This is our business recommendation, not a health code. Food vendors may have their own handwashing rules. Check with Metro Public Health before a food event with vendors.

Use our porta potty calculator for the toilet count first. For more event planning, see our event porta potty rental page.
Hand wash station vs a sink inside the unit
A standalone hand wash station serves 2 people at once and lets the next person use the toilet while others wash. A sink inside a standard unit serves 1 person and keeps everything in one footprint. Stations work better for crowds and food; inside sinks suit small groups and tight spots.
| Feature | Hand washing station | Sink inside unit |
|---|---|---|
| Users at once | 2 (two-sided) | 1 |
| Pump | Foot pump each side | Foot pump |
| Soap and towels | Yes | Yes |
| Toilet line | Moves faster; washing happens outside | Each person washes inside, so waits run longer |
| Placement | Near food, toilets or work area | Only where the toilet is |
| Hookups | None | None |

How are portable sink rentals refilled and serviced?
Event stations arrive clean, filled and stocked with soap and paper towels, ready for 1 full event day. Long-term stations on job sites are refilled on each weekly service visit, when we empty gray water, add fresh water and restock supplies. Multi-day events can add mid-event service.
Busy sites can request extra service visits for an added charge. Learn what happens on each visit in how porta potty servicing works.
Where should you place a hand washing station?
Place a hand washing station on level ground within a few steps of the toilets or the food line, with at least 1 open side for each user. Keep it out of the main walkway so lines do not block traffic. Firm grass, gravel or pavement all work since no hookups are needed.
- Next to the toilets, so washing is the natural next step.
- Between the toilets and the food area at events.
- Near break areas and material staging on job sites.
- Where our truck can reach it on service day.

Questions before you book
How much does it cost to rent a hand washing station for an event?
A hand washing station typically runs $125 to $200 for an event, before tax. Delivery and pickup are on the same itemized quote as your toilets. Your quote is final, with nothing added after you agree.
Can I rent a hand wash station without renting a porta potty?
Stations rent on their own for food booths, school events, farm stands and job sites. Delivery and pickup are itemized on your quote. Many renters still pair them with toilets to save on a second trip.
Does a portable sink rental need a hose or outlet?
A portable hand washing station needs no hose and no outlet. Foot pumps draw water from the onboard fresh-water tank, and used water drains into a separate gray-water tank. Place it anywhere level that people can reach.
Is the water in a hand washing station heated?
Our stations use fresh, unheated water from the onboard tank. Soap and paper towels do the cleaning work. If a food permit calls for warm water, check the rule with Metro Public Health before your event.
How many people can use a hand wash station at once?
Two people can wash at the same time because each station is two-sided, with a foot pump on each side. Place stations where lines can form without blocking walkways or food service.
What happens if the station runs out of water during a multi-day event?
Multi-day events can add mid-event service to refill fresh water, restock soap and towels and empty gray water. Ask for it on your quote. Single-day events usually start full and last the day.
