How many portable toilets does OSHA require on a job site?

OSHA 1926.51 Table D-1 requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, and 1 toilet seat plus 1 urinal per 40 workers above that. Tennessee runs its own plan through TOSHA, which follows these construction standards. For full 40-hour weeks with weekly service, we recommend 1 standard unit per 10 workers.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 — toilets at construction sites
Number of workersLegal minimum
20 or fewer1 toilet
20 or more1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers
200 or more1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers

The legal minimum is a floor, not a comfort level. One unit for 20 people on long summer days fills fast and smells. Our 1-per-10 rule keeps lines short and the tank well under its 60-gallon limit between weekly visits.

For a deeper look at the rule, read our OSHA porta potty requirements guide.

201 toilet2 standard units

Each of our standard units has both a toilet seat and a urinal. Running longer shifts or weekend work? Use our porta potty sizing calculator to check your count.

Do construction sites need hand washing too?

OSHA 1926.51(f) requires adequate washing facilities when crews apply paints, coatings, herbicides or other harmful contaminants. A standard unit only has hand sanitizer. Adding 1 two-sided hand washing station, or switching to a sink unit, gives workers soap and fresh water with no hookups needed.

Our hand washing stations use foot pumps and carry their own fresh-water and gray-water tanks. They sit right next to the toilets and get serviced on the same visit.

What does weekly job site service include?

Weekly service is included in every 28-day construction rate. Each visit, the driver pumps out waste, scrubs and sanitizes every surface, refills the blue deodorizing chemical, and restocks toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Low-use sites can ask for every-other-week service, and busy sites can add extra visits.

  • Waste tank pumped out
  • Seat, urinal, walls and floor scrubbed and sanitized
  • Blue deodorizing chemical refilled
  • Toilet paper and sanitizer restocked

How does the 28-day billing cycle work?

Construction rentals bill per 28-day cycle, and the cycle renews on its own until you call for pickup. To end billing, call or text us. Billing stops on the day you request pickup, not the day the truck arrives, so a slow pickup day never costs you.

Your first invoice includes the one-time delivery and pickup fee. Later cycles are the unit rate only. See our porta potty rental cost guide for typical ranges.

Where should a porta potty go on a job site?

Place job site toilets on level, firm ground close to a spot where the service truck can park every week. Keep units near the work but out of the way of deliveries, equipment swing paths and the dumpster. A level spot keeps the 88-inch-tall unit steady and the door closing right.

  • Truck access: the service truck needs a clear lane every week. Blocked units can't be pumped.
  • Level ground: gravel, packed dirt or pavement. Avoid fresh fill and muddy slopes.
  • Near, not in the way: a short walk for the crew, clear of material drops and crane paths.
  • Door direction: face doors away from the street for privacy.

How do you handle a busy or high-traffic job site?

On sites with more than 10 workers per unit, add a second weekly service or another unit. Add a hand washing station near the toilets, and book an extra service visit 1–2 days before an inspection or owner walk-through so the units look their best.

Crew growing fast? We can drop more units, often the same day if you call by noon. See same-day porta potty delivery.

Questions before you book

How much does a job site porta potty cost per month in Nashville?

A standard long-term unit typically runs $150–$225 per 28-day cycle with weekly service included, plus a one-time delivery and pickup fee of $50–$95, before tax. Your itemized quote is final and nothing is added after you agree.

Can I get less frequent service for a small crew?

Low-use sites can request every-other-week service instead of weekly. That fits a crew of two or three, or a site that only works a few days a week. Tell us how many people use the unit and how often when you book.

Can you add an extra cleaning before an inspection or owner walk-through?

Extra service visits are available by request for an extra charge. Call or text a few days before the inspection and we add a visit on top of your weekly service, so the unit is freshly pumped and restocked.

Can the porta john be locked when the site is closed?

An exterior padlock hasp is available on request, so you can lock the unit overnight and on weekends. The renter is responsible for loss or damage beyond normal use, including vandalism, fire, tipping and graffiti.

What happens if the job runs longer than planned?

The 28-day cycle renews on its own until you call for pickup, so units stay on site with weekly service. You never need to re-book. When the work wraps up, call or text and billing stops on the day you request pickup.

Can my company get invoices instead of paying by card?

Approved business accounts can get invoices with net-30 terms. Otherwise we take Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover at booking. Tax-exempt groups can send their certificate and tax is removed from the quote.

Do I need a hand washing station on a construction site?

OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities where crews work with paints, coatings, herbicides or other harmful contaminants. Many contractors add one station anyway because a standard unit only has sanitizer. A sink unit is the other option.
