What makes our handicap porta potty wheelchair-accessible?
Our wheelchair-accessible unit has 4 key features: ground-level entry with no step, a wide door, grab bars and interior turning space about 60 inches across. The footprint is about 63 to 65 inches wide, larger than a standard unit, so a wheelchair user can roll in, turn and close the door.
The unit is stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer like every unit we rent. It works for guests using walkers, parents with strollers and anyone who needs extra room. We call it "wheelchair-accessible" and leave compliance decisions to the venue or permit office.

What do the 2010 ADA Standards say about portable toilets?
Section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards says that where portable toilet units are clustered at one location, at least 5 percent of them, and no fewer than 1, must be accessible. The 5 percent applies to each cluster, not to the event total. Read the 2010 ADA Standards for the full text.
So 2 separate clusters of 6 units each need 1 accessible unit in each cluster. The turning space is a 60-inch diameter circle, which is 60 inches across, not 60 inches from the center. Rules can vary by venue and permit, so confirm with them before your event.
How many ADA porta potties do you need?
You need at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit for every 20 portable units in a cluster, rounded up. That means 1 accessible unit for 1 to 20 units, 2 for 21 to 40 units, and 3 for 41 to 60 units. The accessible units count toward your total.
| Total units in the cluster | Accessible units needed |
|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 2 |
| 41–60 | 3 |
Legal minimum: At least 5 percent of portable units in each cluster must be accessible, minimum 1, under 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. Confirm the exact rule for your site with the venue or Metro permit office.
Our recommendation: Put at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit in every cluster, even small ones. If you know a guest or worker uses a wheelchair, place that unit closest to where they will spend the day.
Start with total units from our porta potty calculator, then apply the table. Events with permits should also read our Nashville porta potty permit guide.
Where should a wheelchair-accessible portable toilet go?
A wheelchair-accessible portable toilet needs a firm, level spot about 65 inches wide and an accessible route to the door. Ground-level entry only helps if the path has no gravel ruts, no slope and no step up. Pavement, a level driveway or firm, dry grass within a short roll of the main area works best.
- Level spot at least as wide as the unit, about 65 inches, plus room to approach the door.
- Smooth, firm path from the seating or work area.
- No curbs, loose gravel, mud or steep grade on the route.
- Door facing the path, not a fence or wall.
Our guide on where to place a porta potty covers truck access and spacing. Mark the spot with a cone and text us a photo.
Do construction sites need a wheelchair-accessible unit?
A construction site needs a wheelchair-accessible unit when a worker who uses a wheelchair is on the crew. OSHA requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, and the accessible unit can count as that toilet. It rents on the same 28-day cycle with weekly service.
Set the unit on the flattest, firmest ground near the work area. Keep the route clear of materials and ruts as the job changes. See our construction site portable toilets page for crew sizing, or call (615) 237-6088.
Questions before you book
How much does a wheelchair-accessible porta potty cost?
A wheelchair-accessible unit typically runs $225 to $350 per event, or $200 to $275 per 28-day cycle for long-term use, before tax. Long-term rentals include weekly service. Your itemized quote is final.
Is your accessible unit ADA approved?
We call our unit wheelchair-accessible: ground-level entry, wide door, grab bars and about 60 inches of turning space. Whether a site meets the ADA also depends on the route, the ground and the unit count, so confirm with your venue or permit office.
How much bigger is a handicap porta potty than a regular one?
Our wheelchair-accessible unit is about 63 to 65 inches wide, compared with about 44 inches for a standard unit. Plan a wider, level spot and a clear path for the delivery truck. It will not fit through a narrow backyard gate.
Can a wheelchair-accessible unit go on grass?
Firm, level, dry grass can work. Soft, sloped or rutted lawn makes the ground-level entry hard to use. Plywood or a paved spot near the route is a better base when the lawn is uneven or wet.
Do I need an accessible unit if no guest uses a wheelchair?
The 2010 ADA Standards call for at least 5 percent of portable units in each cluster to be accessible, minimum 1. Your venue or permit office decides how that applies to your event. Many hosts add one so every guest is covered.
Can I rent an accessible unit for home care or a family member?
Homeowners can rent a wheelchair-accessible unit on our 28-day cycle with weekly service. It helps during a remodel when the only bathroom is upstairs or out of service. We place it on a level driveway spot near the door.
